Kolkata Rape-Murder: The accused has no professional connection to the hospital but was known to frequent the premises.
The man accused of raping and murdering a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital reportedly returned home after the crime, slept for a few hours, and then washed his clothes in an attempt to destroy evidence, police revealed on Sunday.
However, police discovered bloodstains on the shoes of the accused, who is a civic volunteer. While the accused has no professional ties to the hospital, he was known to frequent the premises.
The body of the woman, a post-graduate trainee doctor, was discovered in a seminar hall of the hospital on Friday morning. Her colleagues reported that she had gone to the hall to rest after having her meal. The rape and murder occurred between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.
City Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal visited the medical establishment on Sunday for the second time in three days and held a meeting with representatives of the protesting junior doctors.
“After committing the crime, the accused returned to his residence and slept until late Friday morning. Upon waking, he washed the clothes he wore during the crime to eliminate evidence. However, during a search, officers discovered his shoes with blood stains on them,” the officer told PTI.
Kolkata Rape-Murder: What Did the Autopsy Report Reveal?
The initial autopsy report revealed that the victim had bleeding from her eyes, mouth, and private parts. There were also injuries found on her leg, neck, hand, and lips.
Additionally, a police officer, as reported by PTI, suggested that circumstantial evidence pointed to the possibility that the doctor was first murdered and then raped.
“The autopsy report was handed over to the parents of the deceased doctor today by one of our senior officers,” the police commissioner said. “We had a productive meeting with the students, and we believe they are satisfied. In response to their demand, we have removed an assistant police officer who was posted here.”
The hospital authorities have also dismissed two security personnel who were contractually employed in the emergency ward for failing to perform their duties.
