The rise in seasonal illnesses such as Dengue, Malaria, and Gastroenteritis is driving up healthcare costs, with average treatment expenses reaching Rs 1,50,000 during peak months.
A recent report by insurance marketplace Policybazaar.com reveals that these conditions represent a substantial portion—33% to 40%—of health insurance claims related to seasonal diseases.
Dengue and Malaria, which make up 15% of these claims, experience a surge in July and August due to increased mosquito breeding.
Gastroenteritis accounts for 18% of claims and remains prevalent throughout the year, with a notable increase during the monsoon season. Additionally, rising treatment costs for conditions such as allergies, influenza, and bronchitis, which also peak at specific times, further contribute to the financial burden.
In the past three years, the average claim size for these illnesses has surged by 150%, with metropolitan cities like Mumbai and Delhi seeing the highest number of claims.
