The Calcutta High Court has transferred the rape and murder case at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital to the CBI.
A special team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Delhi, along with forensic and medical experts, arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday to begin an investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
This action follows the Calcutta High Court’s decision on Tuesday to transfer the case to the CBI, citing a lack of significant progress in the ongoing investigation. The move also comes after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated on Monday that if the Kolkata police could not solve the case by Sunday, it would be handed over to the CBI. Her statement was made after she met with the victim’s family.
According to officials, the CBI has already registered a First Information Report based on the initial FIR filed by the police under sections of rape and murder. The Kolkata police have handed over the case file to the CBI, the officials added.
On Tuesday, the Kolkata police summoned 37 individuals for questioning in connection with the rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor, whose body was discovered last Friday in a seminar hall at R G Kar Hospital.
The police have arrested Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, in relation to the case. According to authorities, Roy, who is trained in boxing, used considerable force to commit the crime. They added that scratch marks found on Roy’s body matched the skin and blood samples collected from the victim’s nails.
Following the Calcutta High Court’s order for a CBI investigation into the R G Kar Hospital rape and murder case, a CBI team arrived at Tala police station to collect the case diary. A police officer noted that additional documents will be handed over to the team by Wednesday. The central agency may also take the accused into custody.
In the meantime, the Kolkata police stated that they are “committed to providing any assistance the agency requires to ensure justice for the victim’s family.”
In a Facebook post, the police stated, “We want to inform that Kolkata Police utilized its best resources and conducted a thorough investigation into the recent tragic death of a young medical student at R.G. Kar Hospital, all within less than four days. Following the High Court’s order, we have now transferred the case documents to the CBI. We remain committed to providing any assistance the agency needs to ensure justice for the victim’s family.”
“We also want to address the fact that several rumors have been circulating on social and mainstream media regarding the supposed details of the crime, which have already been proven false. While we cannot disclose specifics due to the ongoing investigation, we strongly urge the public to avoid spreading unfounded and unverified information. Such actions hinder the investigation, regardless of the agency responsible for bringing it to a conclusion,” they added.
