India and Singapore have signed important MoUs in the areas of digital technologies, semiconductors, healthcare collaboration, and skill development.
On Wednesday, India and Singapore signed significant Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in the areas of digital technologies, semiconductors, healthcare cooperation, and skill development, aimed at deepening their collaboration.
The agreements were signed following bilateral meetings between Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is visiting Singapore, and his counterpart, Lawrence Wong.
Key MoUs Signed by India and Singapore
1. Digital Technologies MoU: The first MoU was signed between India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Singapore’s Ministry of Digital Development and Information. This agreement focuses on fostering cooperation in digital technologies, including Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), cybersecurity, 5G, and emerging technologies such as supercomputing, quantum computing, and artificial intelligence. Additionally, it aims to support upskilling and reskilling workers in the digital sector.
2. Semiconductor Ecosystem Partnership MoU: Another MoU was signed between India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry. This partnership aims to collaborate on developing a semiconductor cluster, nurturing talent in semiconductor design and manufacturing, and encouraging Singaporean investments in India’s semiconductor sector.
Singapore plays a crucial role in the global semiconductor supply chain, contributing to 10 percent of worldwide chip production and approximately 20 percent of the global output of semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
Additionally, an MoU was signed between India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Singapore’s Ministry of Health to enhance cooperation in health and medicine. This agreement aims to foster joint research and innovation in areas of mutual interest, as well as promote collaboration in human resource development within the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. It will also support India’s efforts to promote Indian healthcare professionals in Singapore.
The final agreement on educational cooperation and skill development was signed between India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Singapore’s Ministry of Education. This agreement seeks to enhance collaboration in technical and vocational education and training, building on the existing active partnership in skill development.
PM Modi Receives Ceremonial Welcome at Singapore’s Parliament House
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with his counterpart, Lawrence Wong, following a ceremonial welcome at Singapore’s Parliament House.
In his opening remarks, Modi expressed that Singapore is not just a partner, but also an inspiration for all developing nations.
“A new chapter in relations: Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established. PM @narendramodi and PM @LawrenceWongST had a productive meeting in Singapore today,” MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared in a post on X following the meeting.
The two leaders agreed to elevate bilateral ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They conducted an extensive review of various aspects of the relationship, including Advanced Manufacturing, Connectivity, Digitalization, Healthcare & Medicine, Skills Development, and Sustainability.
Modi also thanked Wong for the warm reception during his remarks.
