Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: The family and relatives of the 31-year-old woman participated in a late-night protest outside the state-run hospital.
The father of the Kolkata doctor, who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, claimed he wished to preserve his daughter’s body but was forced to proceed with her cremation.
The family and relatives of the 31-year-old woman participated in a late-night protest outside the state-run hospital on Wednesday.
The victim’s parents have also accused the police of offering them money.
The father of the doctor told reporters that after they returned home with her body, they were surrounded by 300-400 police officers.
“We wanted the body to be preserved, but the pressure was overwhelming. Around 300-400 cops surrounded us. When we got home, there were about 300 police officers outside. They created so much pressure that we were forced to cremate her,” he said, according to NDTV.
He further claimed that the cremation was rushed, and the family wasn’t asked to pay for it.
The report also mentioned that some officers allegedly asked him to sign a blank sheet of paper, which he said he tore up.
He mentioned that he “responded appropriately” when a senior police officer attempted to offer them money.
He also questioned why the hospital authorities claimed his daughter had died by suicide and stated that they had to wait over three hours before being allowed to see the body.
“When the body of their daughter was lying in front of them at home, the police were offering money. Is this what police compassion looks like?” asked the deceased doctor’s aunt.
“Until the last rites were completed, 300-400 policemen surrounded us, but once they were done, not a single officer was in sight. What were we supposed to do? How were we supposed to get home? The police took no responsibility. They were active only until the last rites were performed, and then they vanished completely. While the body of our daughter lay in front of us at home and we were grieving, the police were offering money. Is this what you call police compassion? They claimed they had fulfilled all their responsibilities—what kind of responsibility is that?” the deceased’s aunt said.
