The BCCI is reportedly considering replacing Harmanpreet Kaur as captain of the Indian women’s team with a fresh face following another disappointing performance in the T20 World Cup.
India’s Women’s T20 World Cup campaign ended prematurely as the team was knocked out in the group stage following defeats to New Zealand and Australia. Despite having one of the stronger squads in the tournament, India failed to qualify for the semifinals. An opening match loss to New Zealand put Harmanpreet Kaur’s side under pressure throughout the group stages.
After the disappointing World Cup performance, reports suggest that the BCCI and team management are considering replacing Harmanpreet Kaur as captain, with a focus on future prospects. According to *The Indian Express*, head coach Amol Mazumdar is expected to meet with BCCI officials and the selection committee to discuss the way forward for the women’s team.
“The BCCI will definitely discuss the possibility of appointing a new captain moving forward,” a source cited in the report stated. “The Indian board has provided everything the team requested, and we believe it’s time for a fresh face to lead the team in the future.”
The meeting between head coach Amol Mazumdar and BCCI officials is scheduled to occur before the series against New Zealand, which starts on October 24. It remains uncertain whether any changes will be implemented immediately or if Kaur will continue to lead the team during this series.
“Will remain a key member…” Kaur has led the Indian team since her appointment in 2016. While the squad has consistently reached the later stages of tournaments, including several finals, the team management is contemplating a reset ahead of the important home ODI World Cup in 2025.
“Harmanpreet will continue to be a vital member of the team, but the BCCI believes it’s time for a transition,” the source stated. Kaur delivered a strong individual performance during the World Cup with the bat.
The most probable alternative for the captaincy is current vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, who brings leadership experience after guiding Royal Challengers Bangalore to the WPL title in 2024. Mandhana has also captained the Indian team in the past during times when Harmanpreet Kaur was unavailable.
A change in captaincy could help India address significant challenges in crucial knockout matches, especially against a team that has demonstrated consistent improvement across formats in recent years.
