Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who canceled his election rallies in Maharashtra to assess the security situation in Manipur, is set to hold another round of meetings with senior MHA officials on Monday.
Violence erupted in several districts of Imphal Valley on Saturday as mobs attacked the homes of multiple MLAs and vandalized property following the discovery of bodies of women and children.
On Sunday, Shah reviewed the situation in Manipur and instructed MHA officials to take all necessary measures to restore peace in the state.
The Home Ministry announced that security forces have been directed to take decisive action to restore order, as the security situation in Manipur has remained tense in recent days.
The Ministry added that armed miscreants from both sides of the ongoing conflict have been engaging in violence, resulting in casualties and disruption of public order.
The Ministry stated, “Strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to engage in violent or disruptive activities.”
BJP MLAs to Meet Manipur CM
BJP MLAs are scheduled to hold a review meeting with Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday at 6 pm at his residence, according to officials familiar with the matter.
This comes a day after the Conrad Sangma-led National People’s Party (NPP) withdrew its support from the BJP-led government in Manipur, with Meghalaya’s chief minister criticizing his Manipur counterpart for failing to contain the ongoing unrest. The violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups has sparked months of unrest, severely affecting daily life in the state.
Curfew in Imphal
In response to violent protests, a total curfew has been imposed in Imphal West and Imphal East, with internet services suspended in parts of the state.
State officials announced that additional internet restrictions have been enforced in the Jiribam and Pherazwal districts for the next two days.
“The total curfew has been immediately imposed in the town until further notice. Internet and mobile data services have been suspended for two days. SSPs/COs have been deployed to manage the law-and-order situation,” stated Manipur Police.
Since May of last year, inter-communal violence in Manipur has claimed at least 250 lives and displaced 60,000 people, sparked by disputes over government grants and job and education quotas.
