Fresh Violence in Manipur Triggers Political Row: BJP Alleges Congress of Spreading Misinformation, Congress Demands Presidential Action.
Renewed Violence in Manipur Fuels BJP-Congress Clash
The recent outbreak of violence in Manipur has escalated into a political showdown between the BJP and Congress, with both parties trading blame for the ongoing crisis. BJP president JP Nadda on Friday accused Congress of promoting an “incorrect, false, and politically motivated narrative” about the unrest.
Nadda’s comments came shortly after Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge sought President Droupadi Murmu’s intervention, alleging a complete failure by the central government to resolve the crisis.
In his response, JP Nadda attributed the current situation in Manipur to Congress’ “abject failure” in addressing local issues during its tenure in power. He criticized the party for its repeated attempts to sensationalize the crisis, expressing shock at their approach.
In a letter addressed to Mallikarjun Kharge, BJP president JP Nadda criticized the Congress for “repeated attempts to sensationalize the situation in Manipur.”
He further expressed concern over what he described as a troubling pattern of Congress leaders endorsing and encouraging foreign forces to disrupt India’s progress. Nadda questioned whether this approach stems from the Congress’ relentless pursuit of power or is part of a deliberate strategy to divide the populace and undermine democracy.
JP Nadda accused Congress of overlooking its own history, alleging that its government legitimized the illegal migration of foreign militants into India.
“I would like to remind you that under Congress rule, Manipur endured one of the bloodiest periods in its history. Beyond the violent black period of the 1990s, which saw thousands killed and lakhs displaced, Manipur also faced a complete blockade for over 120 days in 2011 alone,” Nadda wrote.
JP Nadda asserted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Northeast has witnessed significant transformation across sectors such as the economy, security, healthcare, education, and growth opportunities. He emphasized that the people of the region have consistently demonstrated their trust in the stability delivered by the NDA government, contrasting it with the unfulfilled promises of Congress and its allies.
JP Nadda highlighted several achievements under the Modi government, including the signing of over 10 historic peace accords and enhanced connectivity initiatives that have fostered greater unity among the people of the Northeast. In Manipur specifically, he noted a significant drop in multidimensional poverty, from over 20% in 2013 to just above 5% in 2022.
Kharge’s Letter to the President
In a two-page letter to President Droupadi Murmu, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge accused both the Union and Manipur state governments of “completely failing” to restore peace in the state over the past 18 months. He urged presidential intervention, citing the loss of over 300 lives, including women, children, and infants, and the displacement of nearly 100,000 people now living in relief camps.
“The deteriorating law and order in Manipur has displaced nearly one lakh people, rendering them homeless and forcing them to live in relief camps,” Kharge wrote, adding that the suffering remains unrelenting.
