- Harshit Rana replaced him in India’s squad
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s star fast bowler, shared updates of his training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru after being ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 due to a lower back injury. As a result, he will not be part of the tournament, with Harshit Rana stepping in as his replacement.
Bumrah sustained the injury during the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, opting not to bowl in the second innings. Following the injury, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had expressed hope that Bumrah would be available from the third ODI against England.
However, the fast bowler failed to regain fitness in time, forcing BCCI to name his replacement for the mega event. After being ruled out of the tournament, Bumrah shared a glimpse of his training session at the NCA with his fans with the caption, “Rebuilding.”
Bumrah played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, where he finished as the joint second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament, with 15 wickets from eight matches. His remarkable economy rate of 4.17 and an impressive average of 8.26 were crucial in helping the team take wickets at pivotal moments. For his outstanding performance, Bumrah was rightfully named Player of the Tournament following India’s historic victory.
With Bumrah unavailable, Shami will lead India’s pace attack in his absence.
Bumrah’s absence will be a significant setback for the Men in Blue in the Champions Trophy, especially given his outstanding form across all formats. Recently, he was honoured with the prestigious ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award after claiming 71 wickets in 2024. He also won the ICC Cricketer of the Year after an exceptional year with the ball in both Tests and T20Is. His absence in the 50-over tournament will undeniably impact India’s chances.
With Bumrah sidelined, the responsibility of leading India’s pace attack will now fall on Mohammed Shami, who has made a successful return to international cricket after a lengthy injury lay-off.
