Ashutosh Sharma’s brilliant innings powered Delhi to a thrilling one-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants.
Ashutosh Sharma faced a surprising setback last October when Punjab Kings released him ahead of the mega auction, despite his impressive performances in the 2024 IPL season. However, he didn’t let that disappointment hold him back. Staying true to his mantra — see the ball, hit the ball, and finish games — Ashutosh found a new home with the Delhi Capitals. There, he delivered a memorable reminder of his T20 prowess, crafting a sensational knock that powered Delhi to a dramatic one-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants.
Delhi found themselves in deep trouble while chasing 210, slipping to 65 for five after Faf du Plessis was dismissed for 29 in his debut match for the franchise. But Ashutosh Sharma, coming in as an impact substitute on his debut for Delhi, rose to the occasion. He single-handedly took charge, rescuing the team from a precarious position and guiding them to a thrilling victory with three balls to spare in Vizag. With 22 needed off the last two overs and just six required from the final six balls with one wicket in hand, Ashutosh held his nerve and sealed the win with a match-winning six.
After launching the winning six, an elated Ashutosh dropped to one knee and made a playful ‘switch hit’ gesture toward Delhi Capitals’ newly appointed mentor, Kevin Pietersen. He then repeatedly pointed toward the dugout, looking for Pietersen’s reaction. The England legend, overjoyed by the thrilling finish, erupted in celebration, embracing franchise members and making his way to congratulate the star of the night.
‘Took lessons from last year’
For Ashutosh, unwavering self-belief was the driving force that kept him fighting until the very end, even when the odds seemed stacked against him.
“I learned from last year because there were a few matches where I couldn’t finish the game. Since then, I’ve been focusing on closing out games, even in domestic cricket,” he said after being named Player of the Match. “I have strong belief in myself — if I’m there till the last over and the last ball, anything is possible.”
“You just have to stay calm, trust yourself, and focus on playing the shots you’ve practised. That’s exactly what I did today,” he added.
