The PMC health department has forwarded four suspected Zika-related deaths for audit. The city has reported 73 Zika-positive cases. The deaths, which occurred between July 14-22, involved individuals with underlying health conditions.
The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) health department on Wednesday submitted details of four suspected Zika-related deaths to the death audit committee (DAC), according to officials.
According to PMC reports, the city has recorded 73 confirmed Zika cases and four suspected cases so far. The suspected deaths, all involving elderly patients, occurred between July 14 and July 22. The deceased included a 76-year-old man from Warje, a 72-year-old man from Kharadi, a 68-year-old man from Kothrud, and a 78-year-old man from Baner, all of whom were receiving treatment at private hospitals.
“All the deceased had other age-related health issues in addition to Zika symptoms. The DAC report will determine the exact cause of death or any contributing factors. The virus is particularly serious for pregnant women as it can impact fetal development. In most cases, the infection is asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, but people should still take precautions,” he stated.
The Zika virus is spread through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito, the same species responsible for transmitting dengue and chikungunya.
