Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, and Ravindra Jadeja delivered consistent breakthroughs for India, leaving Bangladesh in a precarious position at Tea on Day 2 of the first Test in Chennai. After India was bowled out for 376, Bumrah claimed three wickets while Akash and Jadeja each took two, reducing Bangladesh to 112/8 and trailing by 264 runs.
Bangladesh faced early challenges in their innings after dismissing India quickly. Bumrah altered his angle, bowling around the wicket to bowl Shadman Islam for 2. Zakir Hasan had a fortunate escape when he was struck on the pads by Mohammed Siraj, but India opted against reviewing, with replays later showing three reds. After three overs from Bumrah and Siraj, Akash and R Ashwin entered the attack, with Akash bowling Zakir and Mominul Haque off consecutive deliveries, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 22/3.
Najmul Hossain Shanto, who had started promisingly, fell early in the second session as Siraj induced an edge to second slip, caught by Virat Kohli. Bangladesh then slumped to 40/5 as Bumrah outsmarted Mushfiqur Rahim with a delivery that moved late, leading to a catch by KL Rahul. A brief recovery came from Shakib Al Hasan and Litton Das, who formed a half-century partnership, striking eight fours as they cautiously began to play their shots.
However, India responded through Jadeja’s spin, putting Bangladesh in further trouble. Litton’s attempted sweep resulted in a catch to substitute fielder Dhruv Jurel, while Shakib’s reverse sweep ended with an edge to the wicketkeeper. Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz managed a few boundaries, but Mahmud fell to Bumrah just before Tea, leaving Bangladesh eight down.
Earlier, India’s innings was curtailed by Taskin Ahmed, who took three quick wickets, making Mahmud the first Bangladesh pacer to achieve a five-wicket haul. India added only 37 runs to their overnight score, yet their lower order showed resilience, led by Ashwin’s 113 and Jadeja’s 86, adding 232 runs for the last four wickets after being reduced to 144/6 on Day 1.
Taskin started the day with the second new ball, dismissing Jadeja for his overnight score of 86. Ashwin edged a delivery from Mahmud for a four, and Akash Deep hit a series of boundaries off Mahmud, contributing 17 runs in a 24-run partnership with Ashwin before being dismissed by Taskin. Taskin then ended Ashwin’s fine innings, with Ashwin caught trying to clear the boundary. Bumrah was the last wicket to fall as Mahmud completed his five-wicket haul.
Brief scores: India 376 (R Ashwin 113, Ravindra Jadeja 86, Yashasvi Jaiswal 56; Hasan Mahmud 5-83, Taskin Ahmed 3-55) leads Bangladesh 112/8 (Shakib Al Hasan 32, Litton Das 22; Jasprit Bumrah 3-28, Ravindra Jadeja 2-18, Akash Deep 2-19) by 264 runs.
