Chennai Air Show Deaths: DMK Leader Kanimozhi emphasized the need to avoid unmanageable crowds.
Chennai Air Show Deaths: The tragic deaths of five spectators at the Chennai air show have sparked a heated political clash in Tamil Nadu. The BJP has blamed the MK Stalin government for the tragedy, accusing it of incompetence. In response, the ruling DMK downplayed the incident, stating that similar tragedies have “also occurred during many temple festivals.”
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla criticized the DMK government over the Chennai air show incident, stating, “Being hospitalized after the air show is not just a tragedy; it’s state-sponsored murder. The DMK government and Chief Minister MK Stalin are directly responsible, as their focus is on dynasty elevation and corruption. The Chief Minister, Health Minister, and the DMK government must be held accountable for this disaster. The Chief Minister should step down and take responsibility for the incident.”
DMK leader TKS Elangovan attempted to downplay the tragic incident.
“Large crowds had gathered at Marina Beach for the event conducted by the Indian Air Force. The turnout was unexpectedly high, overwhelming the capacity of Marina. Similar incidents have occurred during many temple festivals. Opposition leaders will always find reasons to blame us and won’t take responsibility themselves. Over 100 people were taken to the hospital, but the state government has made all the necessary arrangements.”
DMK leader Kanimozhi stated that unmanageable crowds should be avoided.
“The news of the deaths of five people is deeply saddening, especially as those who attended the military flight program at Marina Beach in Chennai faced both the overwhelming crowd and high temperatures. We must ensure that such unmanageable gatherings are prevented in the future,” she said.
One person died on the beachfront, while four others succumbed nearby.
Thousands had to endure the intense sun for at least 2 to 3 hours to witness the event.
Many individuals were taken to hospitals, with reports indicating that they suffered from dehydration and heat-related issues.
After the event, major roads, particularly those near the beach, were completely congested, and local trains—including the MRTS and Metro—along with buses, were overcrowded.
Although a stampede-like situation briefly occurred when thousands attempted to leave the venue simultaneously, police reported that they effectively managed the crowd and ensured safe passage for ambulances.
