No Antibiotics for HMPV: Focus on Hydration, Nutrition, and Prevention, Says Ex-AIIMS Director
New Delhi: Antibiotics are not effective in treating Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory illness currently on the rise in India, said former AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria on Tuesday. He emphasized the importance of staying hydrated and eating nutritious food to manage the infection.
Speaking to IANS, Dr. Guleria, now Chairman of the Institute of Internal Medicine, Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Medanta Gurugram, clarified that HMPV is not a new virus and typically causes mild infections.
“HMPV is an old virus. It usually leads to mild illness but can cause pneumonia in infants, young children, the elderly, and those with underlying health conditions, potentially resulting in breathing difficulties and hospitalizations,” he said.
Dr. Guleria stressed that the virus is self-limiting and requires only symptomatic treatment, such as fever medication, proper hydration, and a nutritious diet. He also advised avoiding crowded places to prevent the spread of infection.
Cases and Transmission
So far, seven HMPV cases have been reported across Karnataka (2), Gujarat (1), and Tamil Nadu (2), with all cases involving children aged between 3 months and 13 years. However, Dr. Guleria cautioned that the virus, spread via droplets like influenza, can infect people of all ages.
Treatment Guidelines
“Treatment is primarily symptomatic. Use paracetamol for fever and body aches, stay hydrated, and consider anti-allergy medication for symptoms like cough and cold. Antibiotics are unnecessary as this is a viral infection, and no specific antiviral drugs are recommended,” he explained.
Prevention Tips
Dr. Guleria highlighted the importance of infection control, advising people to practice regular handwashing and maintain proper cough etiquette to reduce the spread of the virus.
