Alexander Zverev’s quest for his maiden Grand Slam title ended in heartbreak once again as he fell in straight sets to Jannik Sinner in the 2025 Australian Open final on Sunday. Having previously endured five-set defeats in the US Open 2020 and French Open 2024 finals, the 27-year-old German was overpowered by the dazzling performance of the Italian at the Rod Laver Arena, with the match concluding in just three sets.
“I’m doing everything I can. I’m working as hard as ever. I believe I’m doing all the right things off the court and practicing the right way. But the fact remains, I lost in straight sets today. That’s the reality—I lost to Jannik in straight sets,” Zverev said candidly.
He added, “I don’t want to go down in history as the best player never to win a Grand Slam, that’s for sure.”
Zverev’s post-match speech was briefly interrupted by someone in the Rod Laver Arena shouting the names of two women who have previously accused him of physical abuse.
“I’ll keep doing everything I can,” Zverev said, “to lift one of those trophies.”

Zverev received words of encouragement from Jannik Sinner, who urged him to “keep working hard.”
“Keep believing in yourself,” Sinner said. “Keep pushing, because we all believe you can lift one of these very, very soon.”
Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, also reached out to Zverev on Instagram, offering support: “Sasha, keep believing, my friend! You have IT in you.”
Djokovic, who had backed Zverev to claim his first Grand Slam title before the final, also congratulated Sinner with a message on his Instagram story: “Auguri Jannik.”
Rafael Nadal offered his congratulations to Sinner with a message saying, “Congratulations, Jan, impressive!”
In the 2020 US Open final, Zverev was defeated by Dominic Thiem with a scoreline of 2–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6(8–6). In the 2024 French Open final, Zverev was bested by Carlos Alcaraz 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2.
