New Delhi: Over the past two months, at least eight people, including seven children and a woman, have died in wolf attacks in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh. According to officials, the forest department has already captured four out of a pack of six wolves as part of ‘Operation Bhediya.’
With concerns that the remaining two wolves may continue to attack, officials have begun using large soft toys soaked in children’s urine as bait.
“Given that these wolves have mainly targeted children, we’ve deployed large, colorful soft toys soaked in children’s urine to simulate a human presence near the traps. The scent may lure the wolves closer,” Divisional Forest Officer Ajit Pratap Singh explained to PTI.
He noted that officials are tracking the wolves with thermal drones and attempting to drive them towards remote areas near the traps by using firecrackers and making noise.
Another official compared the teddy dolls used by the forest department to scarecrows in fields, calling them a form of false bait designed to mislead the wolves.
Elephant Dung Used to Repel Killer Wolves
The forest department is also employing elephant dung to deter the wolves terrorizing Bahraich’s Mahsi tehsil.
“The dung is set on fire to produce a scent that mimics the presence of elephants. Wolves, being pack hunters, generally steer clear of large animals like elephants,” the official explained.
