Supreme Court to Hear Plea on Clearing Highway Blockades Amid Farmers’ Protests in Punjab
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking urgent intervention to clear blockades on national and state highways in Punjab caused by ongoing farmers’ protests. According to PTI, the case will be heard today by a bench led by Justice Surya Kant.
The petitioner, a Punjab-based social activist, has urged the court to direct authorities to remove restrictions caused by the protests and ensure that highways and railway tracks remain unobstructed.
Farmers’ Protests Continue as Petition Highlights Impact of Highway Blockades in Punjab
The protests, led by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, began on February 13 after security forces prevented farmers from marching to Delhi. Since then, protesters have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana.
The petition claims that farmers and their unions have indefinitely blocked highways across Punjab, causing widespread disruption. It alleges that the blockades pose a national security risk, as critical Army movements to northern borders pass through the state. Additionally, the petition argues that the blockades are hindering ambulances and emergency services from reaching hospitals, endangering lives.
Petition Highlights Rights Violations and Security Concerns Amid Punjab Protests
The petition argues that the highway blockages infringe on citizens’ fundamental right to free movement. It further alleges that foreign and anti-national elements are exploiting the protests to destabilize Punjab, a state critical to India’s security and stability.
