Gas Leak at Sangli Fertiliser Plant Claims 3 Lives, Injures 9
Sangli/Mumbai: A gas leak following a reactor explosion at a fertiliser plant in Maharashtra’s Sangli district claimed the lives of three people, including two women, and left nine others hospitalized, officials reported on Friday.
The incident occurred around 6:30 PM on Thursday at the Myanmar Chemical Company located in the Shalgaon MIDC area of Kadegaon tehsil. Police stated that a reactor explosion released chemical fumes, leading to the tragedy.
“Due to the gas leak, 12 individuals in the plant were affected and rushed to the hospital. Among them, two women workers and a security guard succumbed to their injuries. Nine others are currently undergoing treatment,” said Sangram Shewale, senior inspector at the Kadegaon police station.
Sangli Superintendent of Police Sandip Ghuge indicated that the leaked gas is suspected to be ammonia.
Seven of the injured have been admitted to Sahyadri Hospital in Karad, with five currently in critical condition in the ICU, according to an official.
The two deceased women were identified as Suchita Uthale (50) from Yetgaon in Sangli district and Neelam Rethrekar (26) from Masur in Satara district.
