Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), must decide within a week whether he will pursue the chairman’s position at the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Greg Barclay, the current ICC chair, informed the board on Tuesday that he will not seek a third term and will step down at the end of his tenure in November.
Barclay was appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020 and was re-elected in 2022.
The ICC stated in a media release, “Current directors are now required to submit nominations for the next chair by August 27, 2024. If more than one candidate is nominated, an election will be held, with the new chair’s term beginning on December 1, 2024.”
Jay Shah, the Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), faces a crucial decision within a week regarding whether to pursue the chairman’s position at the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Current ICC chair Greg Barclay informed the board on Tuesday that he will not seek a third term and plans to step down when his tenure ends in November.
Barclay was first appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020 and was re-elected in 2022.
The ICC stated in a media release, “Current directors must submit nominations for the next chair by August 27, 2024. If more than one candidate is nominated, an election will be held, with the new chair’s term beginning on December 1, 2024.”
Shah, widely expected to succeed Barclay, would have to forgo one year of his term as BCCI secretary if he takes on the ICC role. His current three-year term as BCCI secretary ends in October 2025, after which he will be required to observe a three-year cooling-off period, as mandated by the BCCI constitution.
So far, Shah has remained non-committal about his intentions, often responding to inquiries about the ICC role with, “Aren’t you happy with me at the BCCI?”
If Shah decides to file his nomination for ICC chair, he is likely to be elected unopposed, given the BCCI’s significant influence within the global cricketing body.
Venue Change:
The ICC has announced that the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will be relocated from Bangladesh to the UAE. The tournament, originally scheduled from October 3 to 20, will now be held in Dubai and Sharjah due to the recent political instability in Bangladesh.
