Bangladesh 107 for 3 (Mominul 40*, Shanto 31, Akash Deep 2-34) vs India
A combination of bad light and heavy rain limited play to just 35 overs on the opening day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur, with Bangladesh reaching 107 for 3.
The toss was delayed by an hour due to a wet outfield caused by overnight rain. When Rohit Sharma chose to bowl—marking India’s first time bowling first in a home Test since 2015—he hoped his seamers would exploit the overcast conditions. India fielded an unchanged XI.
Jasprit Bumrah started strongly, swinging the ball both ways and bowling three consecutive maidens, but failed to take a wicket. Mohammed Siraj also went wicketless as Bangladesh’s openers, Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan, survived the early spells. Zakir, notably, faced 20 balls before opening his account.
The breakthrough came when Akash Deep was introduced in the ninth over. On his third delivery, Zakir attempted to walk at him but edged it to gully, where Yashasvi Jaiswal made a low catch to his right. After consulting the TV umpire, the catch was deemed clean.
A few overs later, Akash Deep struck again, this time trapping Shadman lbw from around the wicket. Initially, the on-field umpire denied the appeal, but India’s review showed the ball hitting a substantial portion of the leg stump.
Najmul Hossain Shanto came in with a positive approach, collecting a few streaky boundaries off the outer edge. Mominul Haque also began tentatively but grew more assured as the innings advanced, hitting fours off Akash Deep and Siraj before driving Bumrah through the covers.
As the last over before lunch was in progress, a drizzle delayed the second session by 15 minutes. When play resumed, R Ashwin quickly trapped Shanto lbw for 31 with a delivery that straightened from around the wicket, ending a 51-run partnership for the third wicket.
Mominul Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim had a few nervy moments after the fall of the third wicket. Akash Deep found Mushfiqur’s outside edge, but the ball raced through the gap between third slip and gully for a boundary. Just three overs later, Mominul went after a full delivery from Bumrah, edging it over the slip cordon for another four.
That turned out to be the last over before the light faded. Soon after, heavy rain began to fall, prompting the umpires to call off play just before 3 pm local time.
Bangladesh approached the conditions differently compared to India. They not only opted to bat first but also fielded three spinners, bringing in Khaled Ahmed and Taijul Islam in place of Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed.
