The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that the monsoon is beginning to shift southwards, moving towards coastal Kerala, Karnataka, and the Konkan region of Goa this week. The IMD predicts heavy rain and thunderstorms in these states in the coming days.
The Goa education department declared a holiday for schools up to Class 12 on Monday, July 15, due to heavy rains after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for parts of the state. Similarly, the IMD issued a red alert for Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod in Kerala for Monday and an orange alert for Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, and Wayanad. Schools and colleges across six districts in Kerala will remain closed on July 15 due to the forecasted heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The IMD’s weather update indicated that parts of Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa are expected to receive over 20 cm of rain in the coming days. In Maharashtra, a red alert has been issued for four districts—Satara, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, and Ratnagiri—due to heavy showers.
In addition to the red alert for these districts, the IMD issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Palghar and an orange alert for Thane, Raigad, and Pune. Suburban areas in Mumbai experienced heavy waterlogging due to continuous downpours and thunderstorms.
For the Delhi NCR region, the IMD forecasted light rain and moderate winds in the coming days, without issuing any color-coded alerts. Rainfall in Delhi on Saturday morning led to waterlogging and traffic snarls, though it provided relief from the July heat. Noida also experienced rain, with visuals showing slow-moving traffic in central Delhi due to waterlogged roads.
IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar informed ANI, “The monsoon is shifting downward from today. We are issuing a red alert for coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Konkan Goa for the coming days. There may be more than 20 cm of rain there. Delhi-NCR will receive light rain in the coming days. There is no alert for Delhi.”
In Maharashtra, heavy rains caused the Kamwari River in the Bhiwandi area of Thane to overflow on Sunday, resulting in water entering the homes of residents near the riverbanks.
