Vice President Kamala Harris made an unexpected appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, emphasizing the unity that unites Americans in their shared vision for the nation’s future. “As I stand before you tonight, I’m struck by the beauty of our diverse nation. People from every corner of America, from all walks of life, are united by the common vision we hold for our country’s future,” said the 59-year-old Harris, receiving enthusiastic applause from the thousands of Democratic Party delegates gathered for the event.
She added, “This November, we will come together, uniting our voices as one people, and move forward with optimism, hope, and faith. Our collective love for America and the understanding that we have more in common than what separates us will guide us.”
Harris is scheduled to deliver her acceptance speech as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee this Thursday, where she will go head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the Republican candidate, in the upcoming November elections.
“Let’s begin by celebrating our incredible President, Joe Biden. Joe, we owe you for your transformative leadership and lifelong commitment to our country, and we’re grateful for all that you will continue to do,” Harris said, paying tribute to President Joe Biden.
The crowd at the United Center erupted in applause in response to Harris’s remarks.
Last month, 81-year-old President Joe Biden decided not to seek re-election, endorsing Kamala Harris for the presidency. With Biden’s backing, Harris quickly secured endorsements from former President Barack Obama and garnered the necessary delegate votes to become the Democratic nominee.
Harris has made history as the first woman of color and the first Indian-American to lead a major American political party’s presidential ticket.
Former Secretary of State and First Lady Hillary Clinton also spoke on Monday, praising Harris for her character, experience, and vision to lead the United States forward.
“Kamala has the character, experience, and vision to lead us forward,” said the 76-year-old Clinton, who ran unsuccessfully against Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, during her remarks at the Democratic National Convention.
