Following the reported rape and murder of a young doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital, the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) has called for a nationwide shutdown of outpatient department (OPD) services starting Tuesday.
Key developments include:
– The Indian Medical Association (IMA) expressed profound shock in a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda on Monday, describing the incident as deeply distressing.
– According to the autopsy report, the victim sustained multiple injuries, including bleeding from both eyes, mouth, and private parts, as well as injuries to her face, abdomen, left leg, neck, right hand, ring finger, and lips.
The IMA urged the health ministry to reconsider introducing the Draft Legislation titled “Healthcare Service Personnel and Clinical Establishments (Prohibition of Violence and Damage to Property) Bill 2019” in Parliament, recommending appropriate amendments before its introduction.
Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh stated that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is upholding the “Raj Dharma,” emphasizing that “Didi is acting like the mother of Bengal.” He expressed sorrow over the incident, noting that such events have occurred in the past under the CPI(M) regime and during the BJP’s rule in states like Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Manipur. He added, “This shouldn’t have happened in Bengal, but it did. It is a social crime…”
Meanwhile, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar accused the Bengal CM of delaying the CBI investigation, urging her to hand over the case soon, as “evidence in such cases does not last long.”
Junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital questioned why West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee set a seven-day deadline for solving the case.
In New Delhi, several major hospitals joined the strike, including Maulana Azad Medical College, RML Hospital, Lady Hardinge Medical College, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences and Allied Sciences, Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College, and the National Institute of TB and Respiratory Diseases Hospital.
The police reported that after committing the crime, the accused, Sanjay Roy, went to a police barrack and slept until Friday morning. Investigations revealed that Roy was also a member of a welfare unit of the Kolkata Police.
The accused has a history of being physically abusive toward his wives, having married four times. His fourth wife died of cancer, while the other three left him. “Sanjoy Roy’s first wife was from Behala, the second from Park Circus, and the third from Barrackpore, but those marriages did not last long. He then married a woman from Alipore,” a neighbor told the Hindustan Times.
Four junior doctors who had dinner with the deceased doctor have been summoned again. Additionally, the Kolkata police have called in the Head of Department, Assistant Superintendent, male and female nurses, Group-D staff, and security personnel for questioning at the Kolkata police headquarters.
“After facing three days of intense pressure, during which the medical community united in opposition to him, RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh resigned on Monday. However, within four hours, the TMC government reassigned him as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC). Is this TMC’s way of rewarding him for allegedly attempting to cover up the brutal rape and murder of the PGT doctor?” said BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla.
