Following a letter from former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, which urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Governor CV Ananda Bose to take immediate and decisive action regarding the rape and murder case at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Governor Bose announced on Sunday night that he had called an emergency meeting with various community representatives from Bengal. The purpose of the meeting was to update them on the actions taken in response to the case and to solicit their feedback.
Governor Bose announced the prompt response to Singh’s letter on the social media platform X. He explained that the emergency meeting was arranged to update the community on the actions taken and to gather their feedback. Additionally, he expressed his “solidarity with civil society across India, which has voiced deep concern over the horrific incident and the perceived inaction of the government.” Earlier in the day, Singh had expressed his frustration on X regarding the delay in justice and emphasized the need for swift action.
Bose underscored that the protection and respect of women are top priorities, and those responsible for this horrific crime must face severe and exemplary punishment. He assured that the perpetrators will be held accountable with the full force of the law and their punishment will set a strong precedent. “Only then can we begin to restore faith in our system and ensure that such a tragedy never happens again, creating a society where every woman feels safe and protected,” Singh added.
On August 9, a postgraduate trainee at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata was reportedly raped and murdered while on duty. This horrific incident sparked widespread strikes and demonstrations across the medical community nationwide. By August 14, tensions escalated when a mob vandalized the protest site and the RG Kar hospital campus, prompting security forces to intervene and disperse the crowd.
To address the unrest and restore order, Kolkata police have enacted Section 163 of the BNSS around RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. This measure will be in effect for seven days, beginning August 18.
