New York: On the second day of his three-day visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with a range of industry leaders from sectors such as semiconductors, electronics, and biotechnology to discuss India’s potential and opportunities. Participants in the CEO roundtable included Adobe Chairman, President, and CEO Shantanu Narayen; Google CEO Sundar Pichai; IBM CEO Arvind Krishna; AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su; and Moderna Chairman Noubar Afeyan.
“Had a productive roundtable with tech CEOs in New York, where we discussed technology, innovation, and other key topics. I also highlighted India’s significant progress in these areas. It’s encouraging to see such strong optimism about India,” Prime Minister Modi shared in an online post.
During the India-US bilateral meeting on Saturday, President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended joint efforts to build resilient, secure, and sustainable semiconductor supply chains. This includes the establishment of GlobalFoundries’ (GF) Kolkata Power Center in India, which will strengthen collaborative research and development in chip manufacturing.
According to a joint fact sheet from the White House, the leaders welcomed new private sector collaborations on emerging technologies. This includes IBM’s recent signing of memoranda of understanding with the Indian government, which will integrate IBM’s Watsonx platform with India’s Airawat supercomputer, fostering AI innovation, boosting R&D in advanced semiconductor processors, and increasing support for India’s National Quantum Mission.
The leaders also acknowledged progress since the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in November 2023 between the US Commerce Department and India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, aimed at strengthening both countries’ innovation ecosystems under the “Innovation Handshake” initiative.
Since then, two industry roundtables have been held in the US and India, bringing together startups, private equity and venture capital firms, corporate investors, and government officials to build connections and accelerate innovation investments.
While in New York on Sunday, Prime Minister Modi addressed a massive gathering of the Indian community, with thousands traveling from different parts of the country to attend.
On Day 1 of his visit, Saturday, Prime Minister Modi participated in the fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, hosted by US President Joe Biden. In response to the US request to host this year’s Quad Summit, India has agreed to host the next one in 2025. The Quad has become an essential platform for like-minded nations to promote peace, progress, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
On Day 3, Monday, Prime Minister Modi will deliver a speech at the ‘Summit of the Future’ at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, focused on the theme ‘Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow.’
A large number of global leaders are expected to attend the Summit. On the sidelines, Prime Minister Modi will hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders to discuss issues of mutual interest.
