Prime Minister Narendra Modi submitted his resignation, along with the Council of Ministers, to President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday. According to a press release, “The President has accepted the resignation and requested Shri Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers to continue until the new government assumes office.”
The NDA narrowly surpassed the majority threshold with 292 seats, but the BJP did not secure a majority on its own.
Sources informed India Today that Modi is expected to be sworn in for a third consecutive term as Prime Minister on the evening of June 8. The NDA narrowly crossed the majority mark with 292 seats, while the BJP did not achieve a majority on its own. Should the NDA form the government, Modi will become the second leader to secure a third term in office, following former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
Top leaders of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are set to convene this evening to review the Lok Sabha election results and discuss the specifics of forming the government.
JD(U) chief and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, along with TDP President N. Chandrababu Naidu, who is poised to become the next Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, will be in attendance. Other senior BJP leaders and allies are also expected to participate.
The meeting will serve to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his anticipated record-equalling third term and to discuss the composition of the new government. This government is likely to feature a greater representation for the BJP’s coalition partners.
While the NDA comfortably surpasses the majority mark of 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha, the BJP has fallen short of this threshold for the first time since 2014, necessitating reliance on its allies for government formation.
The TDP, JD(U), Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Chirag Paswan-led LJP (Ram Vilas) have secured 16, 12, seven, and five seats respectively, and will play pivotal roles in shaping the new government.
