On Wednesday, June 19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new campus of Nalanda University in Rajgir, Bihar. Located less than 20 kilometers from the ancient ruins of the original Nalanda University, the newly constructed campus pays homage to India’s rich cultural heritage.
The historic Nalanda University was a renowned center of learning that drew scholars from around the globe. The archaeological site features artifacts crafted from stucco, metal, and stone, showcasing the university’s illustrious past.
Prime Minister Modi also visited the ancient remains of Nalanda University, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016. The event was attended by ambassadors from 17 countries, along with Union Minister for External Affairs Dr. S. Jaishankar, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath.

In light of this historic occasion, Prime Minister Modi shared a message on X, stating, “Today is a momentous day for our education sector. At around 10:30 AM, the new campus of Nalanda University will be inaugurated in Rajgir. Nalanda holds a deep connection with our illustrious history. This university is poised to significantly meet the educational needs of our youth.”
The inauguration of the new Nalanda University campus marks a significant milestone for India’s education system and the nation at large. Constructed at a cost of Rs 1,749 crore ($209 million), the campus features two academic blocks comprising 40 classrooms with a combined seating capacity of nearly 1,900. It also offers on-campus residential facilities for students, along with various amenities including clubs, sports complexes, auditoriums, and more.
Bihar Governor Rajendra Vishwanath commented on the inauguration ceremony, saying, “It is a matter of happiness that today Nalanda University is being inaugurated by PM Modi. His presence here underscores the importance he places on Nalanda’s educational and cultural legacies. We are very fortunate that this significant event is happening in Bihar.”
