In Round 8 of the Norway Chess 2024 tournament, India’s R Praggnanandhaa fought bravely but ultimately fell short in the Armageddon tiebreaker against World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen on Tuesday. Despite this setback, the teenager remains in contention for the title with two rounds remaining in the competition.
In the seventh round of Norway Chess 2024 on Tuesday, World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen secured his vengeance against Indian Grandmaster Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa. After the two players drew in their classical game in Stavanger, Carlsen emerged victorious in the Armageddon tiebreaker. This win propelled Carlsen to a one-point sole lead in the open section of Norway Chess, marking a significant achievement for the local favorite. With this triumph, Carlsen’s remarkable record extended to 14.5 out of 15 with White in Norway Chess.
Following his victory, Carlsen surged one point ahead of his closest competitor, Hikaru Nakamura, in the Norway Chess standings. Praggnanandhaa currently holds the third position with 12 points and remains a contender for the tournament title. With two rounds remaining for each of the six players, Praggnanandhaa is slated to compete against World No. 2 Fabiano Caruana on June 6.
Praggnanandhaa made headlines earlier in Norway Chess by stunning Magnus Carlsen, securing his first victory over the World No. 1 in the Classical format.
In their recent encounter on Tuesday, Praggnanandhaa and Carlsen engaged in a hard-fought draw in the Classical game. Both players displayed a blend of aggression and caution, captivating the audience with their performance. However, Carlsen demonstrated his expertise with White in the Armageddon tiebreaker. Despite Praggnanandhaa’s determined effort and near-equalization, Carlsen ultimately prevailed, securing 1.5 points from the match.
In the remaining matches of the day within the Open section, world champion Ding Liren displayed a significantly enhanced performance, securing victory over Fabiano Caruana in the Armageddon tiebreaker.
