Rahul Dravid, the architect of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory, is set to assume the role of head coach for the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025.
Currently on a brief career hiatus following India’s win in Barbados in June, Dravid will soon begin collaborating with the franchise on key matters, including player retention, in preparation for the upcoming auction later this year.
“A source close to the negotiations told PTI that discussions are in the final stages, and he will soon assume the role of head coach.”
Kumar Sangakkara, who has served as the Royals’ Director of Cricket since 2021, will remain in his position and is expected to be more actively involved with the Barbados Royals (CPL) and Paarl Royals (SA20).
Dravid has a long history with the Royals, having captained the team for two seasons in 2012 and 2013, followed by a mentorship role for an additional two years.
In 2016, he transitioned to the Delhi Capitals in a similar capacity and remained with the team until he took on the role of head of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
In 2021, Dravid transitioned from his role at the NCA to become India’s head coach, succeeding Ravi Shastri.
At the Royals, Dravid will reunite with Sanju Samson, who is expected to be retained as captain for another season. Samson initially flourished under Dravid’s guidance.
Additionally, ESPNCricinfo has reported that Vikram Rathour, who served as India’s batting coach during Dravid’s tenure, may be brought on by the franchise as an assistant coach.
