The situation in Manipur remained tense but under control on Wednesday, following clashes between students and security forces during a march to Raj Bhavan the previous day, according to police.
A curfew, imposed in Imphal on Tuesday afternoon, remained in effect Wednesday morning. Additional security forces were deployed, and police patrols increased throughout the town to prevent any further incidents, a senior officer reported.
“The situation is tense but under control,” the officer stated.
The clash occurred on Tuesday during the students’ march toward Raj Bhavan. Later that evening, the government issued an amended order clarifying that the suspension of internet services due to the student unrest would only apply to the five valley districts.
The protesting students attempted to march toward Raj Bhavan in Imphal, demanding the removal of the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) and the security advisor to the government.
Police responded by firing tear gas to disperse the crowd after students were accused of pelting stones at security forces in the Khwairamband and Kakwa Naorem Leikai areas of the capital.
Over 55 students were injured during the clashes and were taken to RIMS hospital, according to a student organization.
In a statement issued late Tuesday night, Raj Bhavan confirmed that student representatives had met with Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya and submitted a memorandum outlining their demands. The students urged the governor to take appropriate steps to address their concerns.
The governor assured them that he would take actions in the best interest of the students and the people of Manipur, according to the statement.
Meanwhile, search operations and area control exercises continued in Kangpokpi district, where arms and explosives were recovered, police said in a separate statement.
