Mumbai: The Bombay High Court has taken notice of the alleged sexual assault of two four-year-old girls at a school in Badlapur, near Mumbai. The incident has ignited widespread protests across the city, with many demanding the death penalty for the 23-year-old cleaner accused of the crime.
The cleaner, who was arrested on August 17, is alleged to have assaulted the girls in the school’s restroom.
The Bombay High Court, acting on its own initiative (suo moto), will hear the case today. The matter will be presented before a division bench comprising Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan.
The government has ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by senior IPS officer Arti Singh, to investigate the alleged sexual assault of the kindergarten students.
Public outrage has been further intensified by reports that the parents of the victims were made to wait 11 hours at a local police station before a First Information Report was filed. In response, the government has suspended the three police personnel involved.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has also promised swift action against the school, assuring that the case will be expedited and that those responsible will face justice.
