The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday that men and women will receive equal prize money in World Cups, starting with the Women’s T20 World Cup in the UAE next month.
The winners of the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup will earn USD 2.34 million, a significant 134% increase from the USD 1 million awarded to Australia for their victory in South Africa in 2023, according to an ICC statement.
India, the winners of this year’s Men’s T20 World Cup, received a cash prize of USD 2.45 million.
“The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be the first ICC event where women will earn the same prize money as men, marking a major milestone in the history of the sport,” the ICC stated.
“The decision was made at the ICC Annual Conference in July 2023, when the ICC Board accelerated its prize money equity goal by reaching it seven years ahead of the 2030 target. This move makes cricket the only major team sport to offer equal prize money for its men’s and women’s World Cup events.” The Women’s T20 World Cup is set to begin in the UAE on October 3.
