Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has called an all-party meeting today to discuss the reported cash recovery at the residence of Delhi High Court Judge Yashwant Varma, describing it as a “critical” and “serious” issue.
“I have called a meeting of all political parties’ floor leaders today at 4:30 pm to discuss the Justice Varma matter,” Dhankhar announced in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.
He noted that he had held discussions with the Leader of the House and the Leader of the Opposition on this matter yesterday. During those talks, it was recommended that he convene a meeting with floor leaders of all political parties.
“The matter is undoubtedly serious. The three of us reviewed the developments and also appreciated the unprecedented step taken by the Chief Justice of India in making all details public,” Dhankhar said.
He continued, “It was suggested by the Leader of the Opposition — with the concurrence of the Leader of the House — that this issue should be discussed with all floor leaders, and I have taken that forward.”
“I have scheduled the meeting for 4:30 pm today after consulting on everyone’s availability,” he added. “I am confident we will have meaningful discussions and chart a constructive path ahead, as both the Legislature and Judiciary function best when they are at their most effective. I do not wish to pass judgment on any aspect, but what is widely appreciated across the country is that the Supreme Court has placed all relevant material before the public.”
This development comes 10 days after a fire at the judge’s residence, which led to the discovery of a large sum of cash.
Justice Varma has refuted the allegations, stating that neither he nor his family has any connection to the recovered cash. He has described the incident as a conspiracy aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
